    We used a computer controlled cylinder to pump fluid behind a rubber membrane to fire toroidal vortices out of the vortex cannons.
    We fixed one of the vortex cannon in a stationary position, and used a multi-axis microscope stage to align a second cannon to it… which sounds incredibly easy, until you realize that
    DYE density was an experiment all on its own.
    If the density of the dye mix was light than water, the vortex would go up.
    If the dye was more dense than water the vortex would fall.
    We had to overcome SO MANY VARIABLES to overcome and we basically spent about 4 hours figuring each variable.
    Water/dye temperature differential
    Water turbulence
    Water turbidity (cloudiness or haziness of a fluid)
    How to reset the aquarium
    Cannon Spacing
    Cannon Nozzle
    Cannon Shape
    Dye homogeneity in the vortex itself
    The piston displacement volume
    The piston stroke speed
    Rubber diaphragm tension, would make one side fire faster than the other.
    Water or air to drive diaphram?
    Firing speed (too slow and they drift, too fast and turbulence tears apart secondaries)
    We did a complete redesign of the cannon 3 different times.
    The Dye loading method was changed several times
    At times We tried to maintain negative pressure on the cannon chamber… we also tried to put shutters on the front of the muzzle. Ultimately I decided it was ok to live with dye dripping out of the front.
    We had to premix the dyes and eventually we got there.
    It got to the point where we didn’t even really know what success looked like and always thought we were there.

My opinion on what’s happening here. When the vortex rings collide it forms a z axis load barring structure being supported by a net zero impact of two vortexes flowing in opposite directions trying to follow the path of inertia on the x axis. Because water is a consistent density and because the load barring capabilities of the z axis motion of the ring is also consistent across the entire surface of the ring the areas that fail are in predictable intervals because the path of least resistance becomes condensed as the ink moves through the medium. This then influences the opposing vortex flows to join into a ring and accelerate outward due to their newly found shape performing better at traveling through water than its former shape thus gaining speed by utilizing its kinetic potential energy more efficiently.

Similar to flowers, I can't help think of the "Numbers" effect.. (or geometry) there's a distinct number of swirling balls of color. Is there always one vertical or diagonal to the ground?, how might it flow in Space? how might the differences in viscosity of coloring and tank fluid affect the pattern?

First, I'm not a scientist, not do I play one on tv, nor have I slept at a holiday inn. That said, I think the reason of the secondary ring formations is from the kinetic energy of the first ring collision. As the areas in the ring gather and collect ink, the directional force from the collision is still in effect. From what I see and how the ink is swirling as the secondary rings form, they seem to be rolling outward from the center and curling behind.

Wouldn’t gyroscopic precession explain why the smaller rings turn 90 degrees to the direction of the larger ring? The two rings colliding would be the torque required to be applied in order to achieve precession.

So, I suspect that the outer ring is inheriting some of the spin from the initial collison, but it's very diffuse, as the rings become smaller, they act much like a shrinking gyroscope wheel until they have enough to form a ring, and then eventually either run out of energy or tear themselves apart. Gathering more data would likely require radioscopic imaging, or using much lower viscosity fluids.

Interesting/fun! Could this be related to Coriolis acceleration? What would happen if the test tank was oriented parallel to the earth's axis and then perpendicular? Seems kind of obvious that the small rings are made by the bits of the larger ring flowing into each other. Since the larger ring is a circle (duh), the bits always hit each other at an angle and then form little whirls as the two flows spin around each other as induced by the friction of their collision. They spiral outwards and leave little rings of their own, and yes that would always come out on a plane perpendicular to a radial of the large initial ring's circle, that part is self-explanatory if you get the rest of what I'm saying.

Isnt that like Tyndall's effect but replaced light and a surface its 2 convex surfaces colliding and forming that ring, that nodules are formed because the experiment is not perfectly performed and this is not because of you its because if the same experiment could be performed in perfect vacuum where the fluid could behave the same way. It looks like after the low pressure of the inside of the ring has caused it to collapse (its momentum stretching it until the surrounding water squeezes back) into even sized, evenly spaces segments, (because the collapse wouldn't have an uneven division, assuming its a symmetrical ring) then the material just compresses back together and just 'mushrooms' in the direction of conserved momentum, whose orientation would be with all of its leading (expanding) area being evenly perpendicular to the direction of momentum. Coz that's where the resistance is. Thats just what it looks like.

Amazing video! I have a theory about the rings facing outward if it helps with anything. The rings turning outward might be because the lower pressure zones that collect the ink sort of suck in the displaced water, making the water "punch" a hole through the center of the low pressure zone.

Maybe the little rings are due to basic conservation of momentum... Dye and water are being sucked into the low pressure areas along a linear-ish ring. It collides and pushes itself outward. The fact that they are like rings going outward is probably due to then originating from a ring. The collisions happen at a slight angle

You need a 3rd (or possibly 4th color) added. It seems that you’re not only observing/measuring the motion of the vortex rings, but also the water in which they’re traveling in. Possibly even add many minute glitter particles in the water. Will they collapse into little mini vortexes within the little rings? How can the motion of the water be observed? Different water temps filmed with temp sensitive camera? Such as they do to study tornadoes by sending in many sensors etc
