Greg.... First let me say how much I enjoy your videos and let me thank you for sharing your knowledge around the grill. I have learned a lot from you. Now then... I truly enjoyed this video and have replicated it myself following your step by step directions. Loved the burgers! My family too. I did this without even trying out the real Smashburger first. Let me say, I am glad I did. I had high expectations of this place. So today we finally tried the real deal. OMG I thought I was eating a slider and I had the extra large one. The bun was so tiny, cold, and NOT toasted. I have to say the meat was tasty, but rest of the burger left much to be desired. The five of us left rather unimpressed. I guess it was because we had your version first. I will say they had excellent side dishes, except for the salty fried pickles. I purchased a smasher from your link and love it, easy to use and clean. I guess we don't see eye to eye on Smashburger, but I do love your version though (much better if you ask me). Keep up the good work, you have a fan... Leo

Made this last night w/ cast iron pan on my backyard fire pit. Did everything you instructed except I pre seasoned the meat just prior to the griddle smash. After the required few minutes of cooking I couldn't believe my eyes when I flipped over the patty and saw the most amazing dark golden brown crust that had formed. Did the usual with the toasted buttered roll, american cheese, condiments ext. This burger tasted sooo freaking amazing that it's definitely in my top 5 favorites now. Thanks for decoding these recipes so us mortals can have a crack at them.

It wouldn't, but a lot of people mistakenly think that cast iron develops its natural nonstick properties as a result of a delicate layer of "seasoning" that must be protected. That's bogus. Yes, seasoning is real, but it's not easily damaged by cooking implements - it's really most vulnerable to acidic foods and soap. But guess what! Even if you totally trash it, it's easily restored. Cast iron is durable - don't believe otherwise. (And I'm kind of surprised Greg is propagating the myth - he should know better.)

I only use my cast iron skillet for these and never damaged it, not sure how you can really. It just has to be a very well seasoned cast iron which mine is. These are the best burgers and unbelievably juicy. Love your videos.

Made this one last night and made the Five Guys one a few weeks ago. Liked this one much better because it was crispier and I really liked the Montreal / Lawry's seasoning. The Smash sauce was excellent also.

Ballistic BBQ probably a long shot. But I tried this last weekend. I use a gas grill with a stainless steel last top go on it. They weren’t getting to much crust. And also would shrink? It was between 300-400 degrees

It's funny you mention Point Loma, I use to live in that area by the Liberty Station and you are absolutely right about having a lot of burger joints in that 5 mile radius of the NTC area.

smash burger is good and they are busy at the one across from where I work Roseville Ca once in a while they send out coupons to the neighborhood businesses which is very nice Also Habit Burger is good too, but don't know if they are in SoCal

I watched several vidoes regarding the smashed burger, simply because I am always looking for different ways to prepare food. Your video is HANDS DOWN THE BEST. Partly because you are clean and informative..some of the others handled the raw meat.bread and fixings all with the same glove not to mention all the scratching...yuck...I followed your directions with a few variation regarding the seasoning. and when I tell you I will NEVER repeat NEVER eat at a burger joint again. used to have a Smashburger 2 miles away, it closed, closest is 10 miles away, 5 Guys is 3 miles away, went to the original Billy Goat 2 months ago for a Cheeseborgie. I liked the one on Washington, it closed like 3 years ago and was 2 blocks from my eye surgeon. Washington and Navy Pier serve fries, only chips on Michigan Ave.

I would say in and out and five guys are just your generic burger joints, although the animal style in in and out and the huge bag of fries at five guys probably make them so unique. Hey Greg my wife and I had our first Smashburger today :) It was beyond awesome :) We almost went to Squeeze Inn but we have been their multiple times. The Smashburger we went to we also did the fire sprinklers in that building :) Do you have a Nations burger in your area? The main thing is the butter and getting a crust on the burger. The seasoning blend I like is salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, dried onion and dried garlic. I like to mix the seasoning with the meat, instead of just on top, that way it's seasoned all the way through. Having a nice quality bun is important and also toasting it with butter/oil.  I usually just toast it in the leftover butter and fat from the burgers, as I let them rest.

Howdy-do Greg, I tried this method tonight and while not having your set up, I heated a Lodge cast iron flat griddle on the grill til screamin' hot and did the smash thingy, using the bottom of a smallish cast iron skillet as the smasher ...and got an excellent crust on the burger, and perfectly sized for the bun. In the midst of it all, I thought I'd try the Squeeze Inn burger technique, adding ice and covering to get the cheese "skirt" but obviously I needed more cheese for that effect, even as you pointed out in that video, you had to add more! So, going against the grain by smashing, if you only do it once at the start of the cook, it worked out well for me! Cheers!

Sir, I wonder how all the ingredients in the Smashburger sauce PLUS the ingredients of 1 part Lowery salt and 3 parts Monetary Steak seasoning...added all together would taste on a grilled hotdog...I'm starting a food cart business and trying out different toppings...or you might can suggest a great but "different taste of sauce" which I can try on my hotdogs and brats that would be a HIT...for my food cart business...PLEASE help...LOL...THANKS!

+Jeferson Vasques its not quite a meatball. smashburger makes their patties in a specific way, and vocal instruction is required.  the point is to emulate the patty as closely as possible, and many steps are needed, which you wouldn't be able to hear if some shitty music was playing.  its almost insulting to recommend he do that
