I've lived in my RV for long periods of time, and can definitely understand the downsides of small spaces--it takes some getting used to and isn't for everyone. The storage space constraint can also be tedious at times, there are always things you wish you could have but can't because you have nowhere to put them. With cleaning and clutter, you have to be very organized and methodic, because just a few things laying around, which you would hardly even notice in a "normal-sized" house, can easily take up all of your tabletop or counter space, and make the place look extremely cluttered, so it's a matter of putting things back the minute you finish using them. At first it's tedious, then you eventually develop a routine and get used to it, but from time to time you do end up yearning to be able to "relax" & not have to pick up every single thing right after using it... After a year living in my RV, I needed a break--a normal-sized house (small, 550 sq ft house, but still bigger than my 90 sq ft RV) where I could have all my clothes, PS4, a 4-burner stove, oven, cookbooks, etc. In the end, it's a trade-off: freedom & simplicity comes at a price, which in this case, is organization skills and self-discipline, and no slack off. The ideal scenario for me is to buy a tiny house or second-hand RV that can be paid off in just a few years, live in it until you've finished paying for it, and then have the option to rent a bigger place for a year or two, move back to the tiny home again, etc. In the end, one of our biggest problems seems to be the idea of permanence, that we have to choose just one thing and stick with it.

165 sq feet have you ever thought of a van like the ford with the large wheel base and extended. I'm not sure how or if that is any better but if you travel a lot I can imagine this may be a good choice. I been thinking of traveling and making a very useable small space but I don't want a trailer. Gas, Tolls, Power and set up. What do you think. Jenna

We went and looked at tiny houses yesterday. I knew going there that my claustrophobia would be a big problem. I decided to go to make my husband happy. I got inside the front door of the first one, and I flipped out. This was one with tall ceilings, too. Claustrophobics, move on!

Hay again, regarding the temporary mud room idea I spoke of just below on my screen, oops on any spelling mistakes and noted while rereading it.. I watched your not you video... In creating this temporary space, how to keep the material sort of bellowed out like a dome shape to give you as much elbow room as possible. Tents use flexible rod like things, secure some to the roof and temporally attached to the outer edge of your 'porch' area. They can be removed and secured back with the material of the tent to the side of your porch. As for lighting the space, natural sources or flashlights etc... As indicated, hope this idea helps you to enjoy your mini home and cuts back on some of that nasty cleaning time. Not many folks enjoy cleaning... I know i don't ....lol

Hay there, watched you video and like your frankness. Slept on it and came up with an idea of how to maybe make a tiny temporary mud room outside your door. Using the material that tents are made from these day to create a temporary mud room, once you have sorted yourself from the outside clothing etc, you simply unzip it door and fold it back against the sides of your mini home. While you are inside this mini mud room you are out of the rain, snow, wind but are not tracking in the worst of these elements into the core of your mini home. With any luck mother nature will clean up the mess you have left outside. Hope that gives you and your fellow mini home enthuiastics(spelling?) some inspirational ideas of how to create temporary living spaces outside the box...

I agree with everything you said!!!! My tiny house is 220 sq ft with a 60 sq foot loft. It’s not on wheels but on skids. For 3 yrs I lived in my tiny house on my families property as I was caring for my elderly mom. Last July she passed away and I was faced with where to move my tiny house. It took about 6 months of trying to buy property to move my tiny house to but every time I was shot down. It was not permitted. I decided to check out property in the north country of New York right on the Canadian border. When I asked about my tiny house being allowed, the answer back from the code officer was “Sure! Why not!!! I bought the 1.4 acres and had my house moved onto the property in May. I am very thankful for the acceptance I’ve gotten from this very tiny town of Chateaugay and for all the other tiny houses I have seen in this area. But it took a long discouraging time to find somewhere where living tiny is accepted and permitted.

This was such a great video and so very true. I lived in a 32ft travel trailer for 3 years when I got out of the military so I could afford to live on my own as I went back to college, and tiny living is no joke. You did a wonderful job of covering the realities of the lifestyle. The scrutiny especially, and believe me it's even worse when its just a travel trailer and not a super cute tiny home like yours lol. I might have been called white trash a time or two, but hell, now I'm educated white trash who owns their own home and works as a fish and wildlife biologist, so as they say "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me" ;)

I didn't live in a tiny house but I lived in a micro apartment I did it for a little over 4 years and to be honest with you I don't miss it every time I purchase something I had to make sure I had somewhere to put it everything you want to buy or bring in you have to know exactly where it's going to go and hope it's going to fit and look like it should summertime in springtime and fall isn't too bad but the winter time when it's cold outside and there's snow on the ground at you can't really get outside it can get really claustrophobic you want to talk about getting cabin fever it will give you Cabin Fever the first 6 months or so living there even though it was fairly nice weather still it took a while to adjust to living in such a small place another thing I didn't like is the fact that you had to keep it clean all the time you couldn't just I'll do it tomorrow because the shit gets out of hand real fast and it can really make you stress out in such a small place another thing even though you might grow to like it your friends and your family won't and they do not and will not want to come over if they do come over they're always going to be looking for the exit they won't stay very long just like it was a little claustrophobic for me when I first moved in it's a little claustrophobic for them just to come visit the only thing I didn't like it didn't bother me none but my girlfriend hated it we had a private bathroom but you can hear each other go to the bathroom and it really freaked her out but I could hear her poop ..lol.... It probably didn't help that I teased her about it.... Another thing that bothered me was the biggest TV I can have with 32in because of the shelf and the area it was going to be at was only big enough for a 32-inch TV another thing that might bother a lot of people but didn't really bother me on my girlfriend was the lack of privacy you really can't get away from each other there is no other room to go into and shut the door so you better really love the other person that you're with but me and my girlfriend sometimes we just put on headphones sit in the recliner drink a glass of wine and lay there with your eyes closed that's the closest you're going to get to being by yourself sometimes another problem that we had is we didn't have a washer and dryer so everything had to go to a laundromat so the bottom of our closet always had three or four loads of laundry piled up in the bottom of it pretty much all the time things I did like about it though was even though it was 11 feet 6 inches wide and 25 feet deep and that was the entire apartment including the bathroom was with rent the Internet my electric bill which was my only real utility our cell phone payments which were prepaid Boost Mobile phones pretty much all of our bills we were doing it for just under $900 a month of course that's not including going out money spending money food money drinking money all that kind of stuff and don't forget laundry quarters that in itself is another probably$30 to $40 a month and we did spend a lot more money going out to eat and going out to bars going to the casino just getting out and doing things because our place was so small especially in the winter time...... It's not what it's all cracked up to be if it's just one person then yeah it would be fine even to people it wasn't bad most of the time but then you throw in the equation that I had two small children at the time and they would come over every other weekend on my weekend to have them and sleep on air mattresses and this was a total nightmare in the winter time.... You can look on my YouTube channel I have a tour of my apartment but I used to live in high moved out back July of last year

See the common denominator in all of these down sides is OTHER PEOPLE. I've always wanted to go on the road for a few years like this, but I'm a loner. There will never be house guests to take up space, use my toilet, cook for, or smell my smells, or dress up for. I've been looking to hear from someone to tell me the downsides though. I work at a hotel now and we often have people in RVs rent rooms, and I've always wanted to ask why they rent hotel rooms. Are they sick of it, is it just b/c they need power, and water? what are the downfalls? Thanks for the info.

The majority of these “cons“ come across as minor details and the consequence of poor choices. I love watching all the tiny house shows. The thing I wonder about though (not owning one myself), is what do you do for really bad weather like tornado's high winds, heavy snow and rain, etc? Are they really safe in some areas of the country? I thought your vid was exceptional, it was so smart to talk about the good along with the bad because most people go by how really "cute" they are and how much money I'm sure they can save over a traditional home. I guess it's like anything else, pro and con's you have to weigh, and even with a traditional home, you are nuts if you don't do your homework before committing to a lifestyle you may (or may not) be able to maintain. You were great!

Solving your problem: - brush your dog 2x a day? - Let your dog wear hair-shedding protective unitard. It's available on line. - before going out to do active sports, lay down a special matt next to your entrance door. Clean up your outfit and all outdoor debris fall on this matt, which you can immediately fold away and dusty it or clean it later. May be you can use car seat liner for dogs? - you knew it is a tiny home, why be surprised that it has a confining space? Maybe wall mirrors will solve this issue? or open up one side of you wall and put a huge window there? or may be make your roof be like a mega sun-roof? or maybe make your roof "liftable" so you can open it while making your bed? - composting toilet: I bet all your guests are curious and interest to know what it's like living in a tiny home. I am sure they are all up to the challenge. You need to chill and enjoy the process. - when dating new people, you need a disclaimer: "meeting composting/toilet-loving men" only. - Smell when you're cooking. Open your windows and let air circulate. Or install an exhaust fan. Put charcoal in containers to absorb the odors. Use orange peels. There are so many thing out there that you can use. - Too much perfume becomes obvious when you're in a tiny space. That is an indication that you are over using it. - Smelly dogs mean you are not cleaning your dog very often. Use baby wipes available in super market, or just 50-50 vinegar - water and a linen cloth to clean you dog. Make sure you wipe him dry immediately after. Imagine sleeping with a smelly dog!? No wonder you need a lot of perfume. - Trash: that trash looks a lot for one person on a daily basis. Those organic matters will begin to deteriorate and yield foul smell after 24 hours. You need to discard them daily. - Expanding a Tiny home? go vertical, one floor maybe, with half of it as an open deck? - Parking for a mobile home: that's a challenge. why not create another video detailing your experience. Then I can rant on it later, ha ha ha ..... - no sugar coating .... the best way to go and it's what makes this a great video.
